Event Overview

Iran’s 2022 uprising, which broke out under the banner of “Women, Life, Freedom,” marked the dawn of a transformative era in the nation’s social and political landscape. Despite the regime’s violent crackdown and suppression of peaceful protests and continued serious human rights violations, which the UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iranand the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran qualified as crimes against humanity, the Iranian protest and human rights advocacy movements continue to persist.

Please join us for a panel discussion, featuring Payam Akhavan and Afrooz Maghzi, to explore the role of law and legal advocacy for justice, accountability, and human rights in Iran in these challenging times. Drawing on decades of firsthand advocacy and litigation experience and expertise on Iran and global justice advocacy, speakers will examine the evolution and prospects of human rights advocacy within Iran, taking into account both the domestic and global contexts, and draw lessons from the multiple advocacy and litigation campaigns for justice and accountability within Iran and beyond. The panel will be moderated by Harvard Graduate Council, Chair of Advocacy, Janan Iranbomy.
